The inspiration for UMi Sleep came to me on a road trip I took up the California coast. I spent my days at beautiful beaches all along the Pacific, meditating by the ocean. There was something incredibly peaceful about the constant whisper of the surf breaking on the beach and the cool breeze floating off the sea. After each meditation I felt rejuvenated and inspired — I wanted to wake up every morning with that same feeling. But instead, I woke each morning sore and sluggish from struggling to sleep soundly on uncomfortable hotel pillows. It was then that I started dreaming of something better than just another one-size-fits-all pillow. The idea of UMi started to come to life.

Umi means “ocean” in Japanese. When you say it to yourself, umi has the same rhythm as the ocean; a dreamy, peaceful flow almost like breathing. Each pillow in the UMi Homegoods collection is inspired by the simultaneous tranquility and energy of the ocean, a harmony and balance that instantly puts your soul at ease.

I set out to find a new solution to waking up with a sore back, a stiff neck, and feeling more exhausted than when I went to sleep. While there were so many different pillows to choose from, none gave me that ocean-inspired calm I craved. Feather pillows aggravated my allergies, microfiber pillows went flat, and memory foam pillows were too hard or too tall. Not to mention the uncomfortable way most pillows trap heat, especially on warm summer nights in Southern California.

I believe that sleep should be a relaxing and rejuvenating experience. I designed UMi pillows to evoke the feeling of spending a day by the ocean every time you sleep: pure, natural, and soothing for the soul. Complete with premium materials and customizable, machine washable designs for the best in comfort and quality, each UMi pillow was made to help you sleep soundly and dream deeply.
